IVAN MIKHAILOVICH KIZIMOV
One of the legendary horse persons in the
history of the 20th century Ivan Kizimov was born April 28th 1928 in a tiny village on the
Don river (south Russia). He was the youngest of 5 children in the family. In the
30’s their family had to starve under the Stalin’s repression of peasants. His father
Mikhail Kizimov worked as a shepherd at one of the studfarms That were little Ivan took
his first lesson of horseback riding. At the age of 17 Ivan asked his father’s permission to go and study in the jockey academy. He was given a loaf of bread and a little money along with a blessing. Ivan joint the academy along with other 60 boys. Due to the harsh post war conditions only few of them graduated. That’s how Ivan has become a professional equestrian. After a few years of racing Ivan switched to steeplechase. Then 3 day eventing (National champion of Russia). Then years of showjumping (Individual silver, championship of Russia). |
In his late 20s he was well known in mighty Soviet Union. They even made a
documentary about him. At the age of 29, in 1957 he got invited to mighty town of
Leningrad, Russia. And offered a position as a head trainer of the city. Ivan hadn’t
even dreamed about it. For 43 years now he still has not been replaced. He has become a
chairman of an equestrian federation of the city of Leningrad.
His Olympic Horse IKHOR. At the end of 1960 Ivan received a call from the sport committee of the city. They proposed to him to go and buy some horses immediately because leftovers of the budget money for the year of 1960 were about to expire in 24 hours if not spent. So without hesitating Ivan rushed to the airport. He barely made to the studfarm down .
In Ukraine he new he would have find some decent horses at. It was a dark rainy night without much of illumination. Soaking wet he had to look at the horses inside the stable with a deem light. That stormy horrible night he bought 8 horses. One or whom would later become the best horse on the planet.
Even though Ikhor was a great jumper (he would jump 170cm on the longe line) Ivan decided to put him into a dressage-training program. Three and a half years of training and Ivan and IKHOR were in the Olympic team of the Soviet Union. In Tokyo Olympics 1964 they ended up 10th individual and bronze team. And it was only the beginning. For the 11 years in a row (1964-1974) Ivan and Ikhor were never behind that place. They were the first violin of the legendary Soviet Union dressage team. Ikhor won 15 gold silver and bronze medals in Olympic, World and European championships. (Look Ivan Kizimov achievements). After finishing his personal performing career, Ivan Kizimov worked as a Headtrainer of the junior’s and later the main team of the U.S.S.R. |

The true story that could have been a disaster led to an individual Olympic Gold medal. The Olympic team of the U.S.S.R. were taking care of their four legged partners themselves. In 1968 it was supposed to be the first transatlantic flight for them. Riders waved goodbye to their horses hoping for the best. The take off went normal. Dutch guards and Russian team’s veterinarian were sitting around drinking water, chatting. On landing they heard some noise coming from the horses’ direction. They rushed over there and found Ikhor , the most promising one freaking out banging the walls of the plane. He got so out of control that people got terrified and scared for their lives. The law gives a right to shoot down the horse under the circumstances. The decision had to be made as soon as possible. Situation was beyond the control. |
One of the guards had already pulled the gun out prepared to shoot. At that point Russian vet Anatoliy Doilnev rushed to the guard asking him to somehow to ap proach going nuts Ikhor and tries to tranquilize him. Ikhor slowly calmed down. When they landed in Mexico City Ikhor’s legs were a bloody mess. Everyone thought that not only Ikhor will compete on THESE games, but also they doubted he would ever get recovered. For the too sleepless weeks Russian vet and Ivan Kizimov spent taking care of Ikhor. And a couple of days before the start Ikhor was running like a young stud as if nothing had happened. It was a miracle. If not for the Russian vet and Ikhor would have been shot down. But this time as if thanking humans who helped him out, he performed like never before. He brought individual gold for his master Ivan Kizimov and his country.
